The Life Friction Index

A framework for identifying the recurring points where ordinary actions consume more time, thought or effort than they should.

Not every problem needs more motivation

Some areas of life stay difficult because the same avoidable friction is paid repeatedly: searching for information, deciding from scratch, moving between tools, unclear storage, badly timed tasks or environments that create constant interruption.

The Life Friction Index is a Westmere systems framework, not a clinical instrument. Its purpose is to identify recurring operational drag.

Measure repetition and cost

A minor annoyance that happens every day can matter more than a larger inconvenience that appears once a month. Look at frequency, time cost, cognitive cost and the likelihood that the friction causes avoidance.

The highest-value fixes are often boring: one trusted capture system, one default meal, one fixed storage place, one recurring reminder or one clear rule for a repeated decision.

If this feels familiar, the useful question is not whether the idea is true in general — it is how strongly it is shaping your current priorities.

Earn complexity

Optimization should reduce total friction. If the new system requires dashboards, maintenance and constant categorization that exceed the problem it solves, the optimization has failed.

Westmere treats simplicity as an outcome, not an aesthetic. The best system is the least complex one that reliably changes the result.

Questions to use

Which small friction do you pay almost every day?

What decision are you unnecessarily remaking?

Could one default rule remove this friction without creating a larger maintenance burden?

Find out whether another area deserves attention before adding another tracker, routine or optimization layer.
