The Energy Debt Framework

A practical way to distinguish a temporary low-energy day from a pattern in which daily demands repeatedly exceed recovery capacity.

The idea

Energy debt is not a medical diagnosis. It is a Westmere coaching framework for noticing a repeated mismatch between what your days demand and what your current recovery system can reliably support.

One exhausting day is not the pattern. The signal appears when output repeatedly depends on borrowing from tomorrow: later bedtimes, skipped recovery, more stimulation, more effort and less margin.

What to observe

Look for repeated timing. When does energy fall? What usually happened in the previous two to four hours? Which days require unusually long recovery afterward? Which commitments are protected even when capacity is low, and which are repeatedly sacrificed?

The aim is to identify the recurring cost, not to explain it medically. Persistent or concerning fatigue deserves appropriate professional assessment rather than being reduced to a lifestyle score.

If this feels familiar, the useful question is not whether the idea is true in general — it is how strongly it is shaping your current priorities.

The Westmere response

Do not begin by optimizing ten variables. Stabilize one recovery input and one demand input long enough to see whether the pattern changes. That might mean protecting wake time, reducing one recurring late-night demand or changing the timing of cognitively heavy work.

If the signal improves, you learned something. If it does not, the next step is not self-blame; it is better evidence and, where appropriate, qualified health evaluation.

Questions to use

Which part of your week seems to borrow the most energy from the following day?

What is one demand you could reduce before adding another recovery tactic?

What pattern would make you seek professional health advice rather than continue self-experimenting?

Not sure whether energy, sleep or consistency is actually your main bottleneck? Compare them with the other major areas of your life.
